How can we classify animals?

There are at least 800,000 different animal species in the world. These are only the species that have been described and named formally. That excludes any species that may still be discovered and the millions of insect species on Earth.

There are billions of different types of living things on this planet, and they have a scientific system to group them and classify them. Scientists classify animals on the basis of shared characteristics. Basically, they are classified by the special features unique to that group.

What are the 7 main classifications of animals?

Aristotle (384 BC – 322 BC) was the first to develop a method to classify organisms. He classified them by their means of transport; air, land, and water.

Then, Carolus (Carl) Linnaeus (1707-1778), a Swedish botanist introduced a way to classify and name organisms that we still use today called taxonomy. There are 7 levels of animal classification in taxonomy including a Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, and Species.

Here is an example of animal taxonomy classification:

  • Blue Whale
  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Chordata
  • Class: Mammalia
  • Order: Cetacea
  • Family: Balaenopteridae
  • Genus: Balaenoptera
  • Species: Balaenoptera musculus

How do you teach animal classification?

There are several different ways to teach your children how to classify animals in the animal kingdom.

1.) Watch videos about the classification of animals so visual learners can see the animals.

2.) Read books on the animal kingdom and classifications to learn fun facts with a study of animals.

3.) Use a taxonomy mnemonic (KPCOFGS), so they remember the order:

  • Daring (Domain)
  • King (Kingdom)
  • Phillip (Phylum)
  • Came (Class)
  • Over (Order)
  • For (Family)
  • Good (Genus)
  • Spaghetti (Species)

You can also use animal classification activities (i.e lapbooks, soring cards, worksheets, etc.) to help children have a hands-on learning experience. Playing an animal classification game is a great way to add some fun to your animal classification lessons.
