Printables to Help Your Kids Learn About Reptiles

I really don’t mean to make anyone jealous. I lived in Florida for years, so I had my fair share of sharing an environment with reptiles. Therefore, I am super happy that the island where I live (Tonga) has absolutely NO land-dwelling snakes. I can’t say that about other reptiles, but I can live with those more so than snakes. When our little family lived in Florida, we had a serene sunroom. The only problem with it was – you guessed it, snakes and the occasional alligator sighting. My back yard faced a creek, so it was inevitable that one or two snakes would slip in. That was not my favorite part of Florida, as much as I miss the United States.

Nonetheless, reptiles are pretty fun animals to study with your kids. If your kids are anything like mine, then they aren’t too bothered with reptiles.

In fact, they may be quite fascinated by them. They may even want to touch them and examine them. They may also want to race the occasional geckos against each other. No? That one may be just my silly kids.

Note: We have no television, so my kids have no choice but to make their own entertainment. Public service announcement – No geckos were harmed during the races.

5 Interesting Reptile Facts

Here are 5 interesting facts about reptiles to share and explore with your kids:

1. No matter how weird this may seem, nearly all reptiles actually lay eggs – with shells that hatch.
   
2. The bodies of reptiles are covered by one of two things – scales or an outer bony plate like a shell.
   
3. Reptiles have very tiny brains in proportion to their bodies.
   
4. To defend themselves, reptiles use all types of things like avoidance, hissing, biting, and the coolest defense mechanism ever – camouflage. (Isn’t God amazing!)
   
5. Reptiles individually have really unique fun facts. For instance, a frog’s vision field is almost 360° all around, they hibernate, and their eyeballs help them digest food. Weird, right? Also, turtles have an incredibly long life span. My Tongan island people are super proud of this (I live there)! The oldest ever recorded turtle in the world, named Tu”i Malila, of the Tongan Islands, passed away at the distinguished old age of 188! (Reference: National Geographic Kids)
