Teaching Bible stories to my children is one of my favorite memories of homeschooling. We like to do Bible first thing in the morning before we do any of our other school work. It has become a special time for our whole family as we wake up and take on the day with the holy Bible. I love watching Bible stories for kids come to life in their little eyes as we are reading and going over them together. So today I’m sharing some free Bible Story printables for kids.

Free Bible Printables

I love all the free resources that are available to us that we can use to teach our children important Bible stories. Like anything we do as homeschoolers, we really enjoy putting an educational twist on what we are learning by incorporating Bible activities. If you are wanting to teach Bible stories for kids as part of your Bible homeschool subject, there are lots of free printables to help you get started.

These printables are cute and memorable for your children. They will help make the beloved bible stories come alive. They are also educational and help with writing and reading. There is even some math thrown into some of them!

Why Teach Stories of the Bible

Bible stories for kids are a great way to teach children about God’s love, god’s commands, the story of Jesus, and God’s word. And what children learn when they’re young lays the foundation stones for the Holy Spirit to act in their lives as they grow older.

However, I know it’s intimidating to think about reading from the family Bible with toddlers. Toddlers have a very short attention span. So you’ll want to look for a beginner’s Bible or a children’s Bible that’s designed for toddlers when you start.

There are several beautiful toddler Bibles and Bible story books available. Choose one of the age-appropriate Bibles that you like. Make sure that the stories are short as toddlers have short attention spans. You can even find a cute Bible board book that tells individual Bible stories.

How to Study the Bible with Young Children

When you’re introducing the Bible to your younger children, keep in mind that you want fun Bible lessons for your children. You want your children to look forward to spending time with you reading the Bible so as they grow older, they’ll desire more Bible study.

The best way to teach children’s Bible stories is to always Start with a short prayer with your children. This sets the tone for what you want them to experience as they discover the wonderful things about the son of God and God’s promise of salvation to all who believe.

Use a Picture Bible for Toddlers

Read to your toddlers from a picture Bible, or The Action Bible. The Complete Illustrated Children’s Bible is also a good choice. Remember, you’ll want to use a children’s Bible that has very short stories. Younger kids do not sit still for any length of time.

It also helps to curl up with your small children to read the short Bible stories. Your goal should be to make Bible story time as cozy and fun as possible. You might pull out hot chocolate and cookies when you curl up together. Another good choice is to read a short Bible story at snack time. The idea is to make your Bible story time pleasant so your children look forward to reading the Bible with you.

Discuss the Bible Story

At the end of each story, discuss it gently with your children. Ask them to tell you the story in their own words. Ask a couple of simple questions and see if they can answer them. Don’t worry if you don’t get a good response at first. Listening to a story, retelling it, and answering questions about the story is a skill that takes time to develop. If your children struggle, gently guide them towards the answers you’re looking for and move on.

Again, it takes children a while to learn how to listen to a story and answer questions about it. So, don’t be upset if your children are in elementary school before they’re able to give you good answers to the questions you ask.

What to Do After You Discuss the Bible Story

After you’ve read and discussed the Biblical story, give your young children an activity page or coloring sheet. Young toddlers will likely scribble over the page, but even scribbling helps to develop their fine motor skills. You can also re-enact the Bible stories with your children.

Read the stories of the Bible often and don’t be afraid to read popular stories many times. Toddlers adore repetition and will happily listen to their favorite stories again and again.

Best Bible Stories for Toddlers

The goal of reading the great Bible stories to your children is to give your children a solid foundation in the Word of God.

So, the best Bible stories, to begin with, are the Creation story, Noah’s Ark, the story of David, Jonah and the Whale, and the story of Ruth.

As you read the stories, be sure to help your children relate the stories to their own lives. Also, these stories make a great way to start having family devotions.
