Have you ever taken the time to study the great women of the Bible in a small group or in your homeschool lessons? Our 60 Women of the Bible character study worksheets are a great option to dig into some of the most powerful testimonies from God’s word.

A few years ago I was looking for a new Bible study for my personal time. I ran across a study about women that Jesus loved and the truth of His love in the stories of these women touched my heart in a new way.
Since then I have intentionally spent time studying more women from the pages of the Bible. Some are courageous women we can hold as amazing role models while others are evil and reject God. A few women have entire books and chapters devoted to their stories while others may be mentioned in only one or two Bible verses.
Regardless of the character of the woman, God’s divine plan and love is evident throughout the Holy Bible.

Strong Women in the Old Testament
There are so many strong women of the Bible. Here are 3 we hope you’ll explore in your homeschool Bible lessons or in your personal quiet time with the Lord:
The story of Abigail can be found in I Samuel 25. There we find that her husband, Nabal, was a fool and insulted David (who would later become King David) to the point that he was bringing 400 men to destroy Nabal and his entire household.
Even knowing that David intended to kill her, Abigail courageously went out to meet him with gifts. David was so impressed by her actions and wisdom that he changed his mind and spared them all because of Abigail.
The book of Esther is the story of a young Jewish woman who lived under the control of the Persian Empire. Through circumstances out of her control she finds herself in the important role of queen and has to make hard choices – ones that could cost her life – to help save her people.
Esther was one of my favorite women of the Bible when I was a determined teenager and I highly recommend it for all younger women to study. No where is the Lord God actually mentioned by name, yet God’s provision and guiding hand is clearly seen.
Hannah is a story that touches any woman’s heart who has ever longed to be a mother. Her life was full of sorrow and prayer as she longed and waited for a child. In the end, God answered her prayer and gave her a son, Samuel. She dedicated Samuel back to the Lord and he went on to be a faithful servant to God his whole life.
Women Who Personally Knew Christ Jesus
There are a few women in the Bible who were blessed to know Jesus when he walked the earth. To be known and loved perfectly by the one who never sinned must have been amazing!
Mary was a young girl who went on an extraordinary journey of trust throughout her life. After being told by the angel Gabriel that she would become the mother of Jesus – even though she wasn’t married – she responded in obedience and trust.
Later as she watched her son die on the cross, she continued to trust in God’s plan. Even after his return to Heaven we find Mary praying with other believers in the midst of persecution. No character study of the women of the Bible would be complete without taking the time to explore her life.
Martha, along with her sister Mary and brother Lazarus, was a personal friend of Jesus. She tried to faithfully serve Jesus using her hospitality talents. Martha is a woman who can remind us that while it is good to be faithful serving our family and taking care of all the daily needs, it’s also important to take time to be with Jesus.
Mary Magdalene was a woman who was a follower of Jesus and modeled the everyday choice of devotion we should all strive for.
Not only did she witness the crucifixion of Jesus but she was one of the faithful women who went to the tomb to anoint his body. She became the first person that Jesus appeared to after He arose and was sent to share the news of His resurrection.
Faith-filled Women of the Bible
Hebrews 11 is known as the “Hall of Faith” and gives us examples of individuals who lived out their faith in God. Along with multiple men, writer of Hebrews also mentions two women:
The amplified version of Hebrews 11: 11 says “By faith even Sarah herself received the ability to conceive [a child], even [when she was long] past the normal age for it, because she considered Him who had given her the promise to be reliable and true [to His word].”
Simply put, even though Sarah was definitely of old age, she had faith in the promise of God’s provision – even when she had to wait a long time! How about you? How strong is your faith when you feel God isn’t answering on your time schedule?
Rahab’s story is another one listed in Hebrews 11 and is just as remarkable. Rahab was a prostitute who lived in the town of Jericho. Jericho was in the promised land that God had given to the people of Israel. Rahab protected the spies when the king of Jericho sent soldiers to her and God saved her because of her faith. In fact, even though she was a prostitute she later became the great-great-grandmother of King David and an ancestor of Jesus.
What an amazing example of a faith-filled woman of the Bible and reminder that God can redeem us all!
Faithful Servants in the New Testament
There are also women in the Bible who are recognized for being faithful servants throughout their lives. Their stories many not be as exciting as a queen, a judge or the mother of Jesus but the lesson of being a faithful follower of Christ is just as important. Here are 3 such women:
We meet Anna in the book of Luke. She is an 84-year-old prophetess who, after becoming a widow, spent the rest of her whole life as a faithful servant to God in the temple. She was there the day that Joseph and Mary presented Jesus. She began to praise and give thanks to God because she recognized what the coming of Jesus meant to those looking for redemption.
Throughout the pages of the new testament are numerous writings by the Apostle Paul. In one of Paul’s letters to the Romans he mentions multiple women of the Bible. We aren’t sure if they are younger or older women, but Paul points them out by name. Here are two of them:
In Romans, Paul recognized her as a servant of the church. The Greek word used to describe her is diakonos which does mean servant. Over the years, the church came to use it for the office of “deacon”. Whether or not she was actually a deacon as we think of the word today, she was definitely a faithful servant to the church and God.
In chapter 16 of Romans, Paul greets Priscilla and her husband, Aquila. This was a couple he had previously stayed with and he greets her and her husband as “fellow workers for Christ”. They were such faithful workers they even risked their lives for his life at one point.
How about us? Are we willing to risk our lives for others because of our walk with the Lord?
