I love the idea of art on paper. I can’t paint, I can’t take a photograph, or play an instrument to save my life. Yet, I can relate to art in text.

It’s not that I am good at writing. I just appreciate it. I love that the things I can’t say in speech, I can say in my writing. That is why poetry is so important to me; so many people in this world keep things inside. Yet poets, don’t.

Poets let it all out. They can see a stream and they not only see peace, but they see words that flow to share that peace with the world.

We can see ideas, thoughts, and feelings through reading. We are internalizing a piece of their mind, getting a piece of their soul’s innermost thoughts. Yet, they paint the words like a rainbow in our minds.

Poetry can formulate a way for your kids to express themselves, their feelings, or even just learn how to see things differently.

They also are able to study the lives and works of poets as a hugely important example of people who weren’t afraid to express themselves. Poets are an example of people who found a way to express themselves with words.

In this day and age that effects our children, whether we know it or not, we need to encourage them to put their efforts into productive things. Poetry is an example of people doing just that.

So, celebrate poets with your homeschool students. The words in their poetry will connect with them. They can either hate the work or they love it. Either way, reading poetry opens up the opportunity for discussions with your students. So, open up communication, imagination and learn all about great poets old and new.
