Pierre Auguste Renoir is one of the world’s most adored and well-known impressionist painters.
What is impressionism?
Impressionism is a movement in the art world that originated in France around the 1860s. These types of paintings were characterized by the artist’s impression of a specific moment.
Many times there was a shifting of light and color, but the artist’s unique impression of reality was the key.
Impressionism also captured the depiction of one’s feelings and experiences. For instance, you would see in the artwork impressions of people, light, atmosphere, landscape, and objects.
What is pretty cool about impressionists is that they changed the art game by being the first to paint outdoors.
Their painting was laid thickly and used quick brush strokes.
Who was Pierre Auguste Renoir?
Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in Limoges, France, on February 25, 1841. Renoir took his first painting job in 1854 working in a porcelain factory painting designs on fine china pieces.
He often visited the Louvre to admire the works of the French masters. Then in 1861, he began attending an art studio and enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux.
In the art studio, he met the likes of other artists who would also soon become known to the world like Paul Cézanne and Claude Monet. This group eventually formed the Impressionist Era in 1863.
In 1869, Renoir worked with Claude Monet on the very first impressionistic landscape painting outdoors.
After going to war in 1870, Renoir spent ten years painting everyday scenes from all over Paris.
Renoir did a huge amount of paintings during his lifetime. Many of his paintings were of the female form. As a matter of fact, he married his favorite model to paint, Aline Charigot.
Note: Please keep this in mind when showing his paintings to children. I have found some kid-friendly videos for your kids below.

Renoir painted for over 60 years and created more than 6,000 paintings. At age 78 before his death, he was quoted as saying the famous quote:
“I think I’m beginning to understand something about painting.”
This is a great lesson for kids to be humble and always be ready to learn new skills or better ways to do things.
