These free printables and unit studies about lions will help you learn all about the king of the jungle. However, is it really the king of the jungle?
Why are lions considered the king of the jungle? Curious why? Here’s a kicker. Lions do not even live in the jungle.
A lion’s actual habitat is in the open savanna, grasslands, and plains. Here they hunt mammals like gazelles, antelope, and zebra. Lions specifically live in Africa south of the Sahara and in Northwest India.
The reason they are called the king of the jungle is due to a loss in translation throughout history. The word jungle has a root from the Hindi word jangle, which actually means forest or wasteland.
The general consensus is this is where that colloquialism began. Although the phrase is a misinterpretation, it is quite fitting. Lions are incredible beasts of the wild.
In the wild, lions live for about 12 years. The average lion weighs around 400 lbs, but the heaviest ever recorded weighed about 826 lbs. Can you imagine?

Lions sleep for about 16-120 hours per day. This is interesting as in the zoo I was always so sad at the sleepy lions, but they were actually just sleeping, not being bothered.
