Teaching the Alphabet

One of my favorite memories of homeschooling is teaching my little ones to learn the alphabet. I love hearing their little voices sounding out the letters and how excited they get when they recognize a letter.

The most common way to teach the letters of the alphabet is with the ABC song and by teaching alphabetical order. This is a great way for toddlers to recognize and name all 26 letters in the alphabet. There are many other fun ways to teach the whole alphabet to young children.

What is the best order to teach the alphabet?

Teach upper case letters first if you are teaching toddlers and preschoolers. Early learners will come in contact with large letters and capital letters on educational toys and early learning flashcards.

If a kindergartner needs to learn the alphabet you will want to teach them their lowercase letters first. This is because they will come across lowercase letters in early reading materials and books.

If your kids understand and have a knowledge of the alphabet already, you can teach upper and lowercase letters together at the same time.

Teach the names of the letters before you teach the sounds. This will help, as many letter names are related to the sound that they make.
