Resources to Learn About Constellations

I say learn with your children because I learned about constellations right alongside my kids. Let me tell you what motivated me to teach constellations.

I grew up in the Bronx, New York, where we didn’t stargaze much at all. I can honestly say that I didn’t appreciate constellations and stargazing until I moved to a small island as an adult. Sad, I know.

My husband and I became friends with a missionary couple who built a skate park for the local kids on the island. We would hold Wednesday night bible studies at their home (hut), and one of those nights, we took the bible study outside. For some reason, we just stopped and stared up at the sky. It literally took my breath away.

I wonder if the Lord did that on purpose. I was having a really tough time adjusting to a new country then, a second world country at that. I think I could have stayed outside staring at those stars all night.

People were pointing out the constellations to me; I had just never seen them before. It was a little gift for me in the midst of some rough times.

I appreciated that the Lord allowed my kids and I to be in a place where we could see the night skies so clearly. It felt as if we could touch the stars, and it motivated us to learn more about them.

Your whole family will be enthused with studying the stars and constellations. There are so many cool facts about constellations that had my kids engaged and interested in the topic.

Cool Facts about Constellations:

  • The stars in each constellation may not be close to each other at all (although, they look like they are.)
  • The constellations were used in ancient times to keep track of the calendar, know when to plant and harvest crops and also for navigation.
  • Twenty-two different constellation names start with the letter “C.”

If your family has shown an interest in learning constellations and the skies, then don’t pass up the chance to teach them all about them. Remind your children that in Job 9:7, the Bible tells us, “Who commands the sun not to shine, and sets a seal upon the stars.”

If he sets a seal upon the stars then, he surely can set a seal over our lives. Science with God’s good Word is a BONUS!
