Volcanoes are fascinating and scary. They can spew out hot toxic gases, ash, magma and even fiery rocks!

Kids always seem to get excited with things that explode so they may really enjoy learning about volcanoes in a fun science unit study format.

If you watched the news this past summer, you may have seen the Kilaeuea Volcano that was erupting and traveling rivers of hot lava throughout the channel to the ocean south of Kapoho in Hawaii.

My children were fascinated with the videos of flowing lava like something out of a movie!

 

Here are some interesting facts from National Geographic Kids that will get your children excited about learning about volcanoes:

• The word volcano is derived from the Roman name “Vulcan” which is the Roman god of fire. 
• A volcano is an opening in the earth’s surface, usually in a mountain, which gas, hot magma and ashes can escape from.
• Volcanoes can be found on the ocean floor and even under ice caps.
• Volcanoes can be classified as active, dormant, or extinct.
• There are 1,900 active volcanoes on earth that are likely to explode.
• 350 Million people live within the danger range of an active volcano!
• The lava that comes out of volcanoes can reach 1,250 degree Celsius and will burn and melt anything in it’s path.
