Here in Florida, we are no stranger to hurricanes. These powerful winds can cause some serious damage that we have unfortunately seen first hand. We have many friends whose homes were damaged with flooding after Hurricane Irma, and lots of damages by falling trees in Hurricane Matthew.
Hurricane season is an important season to prepare for here in Florida and other places that experience these dangerous disasters.
Having small children, hurricanes can be extremely scary, especially with all the media coverage and chatter that goes on when a hurricane is “in the box”. I have found that if my children are prepared, and are able to help with our preparation, and we are open and honest about what will happen, their fears are subsided and they aren’t as scared. We have prayed and sang ourselves through quite a few hurricanes, with the help of God and lots of junk food, we made it through!
If you are learning about natural disasters in your homeschool, or you live in a state that is prone to hurricanes, you will most likely want to teach your children about hurricanes. We have put together lots of resources to help you create your own unit studies on hurricanes.
