Elephant are Amazing

Before I cared about animal conservation or the captivity of wild animals, I took my little children to the Barnum & Bailey Circus. The only thing they can remember is the elephant ride. They have never forgotten it.

I love that at least they got to experience something magical. Elephants are truly the epitome of gentle giants. Our favorite part of the zoo in America was watching the elephants swim.

There is just something about these huge creatures being simultaneously gentle and graceful. They are magical in the most earthly sense. My kids say they feel as if elephants are what some dinosaurs must have looked like.

That is why when we decided to study elephants last year it was a great experience. We may have stayed a little too long on the unit study, but it was well worth it.

So, I asked my kids to gather some of the most interesting facts they learned about elephants. They put them in order for you – I love that they enjoy doing this for me.

10 Fun Facts About Elephants

Check out my kid’s favorite facts about elephants:

  1. Elephants have tusks that are made of ivory.
  2. An elephant’s trunk is a fusion of its nose and upper lip. (My kids thought that was so funny because they couldn’t un-see it after finding this out.)
  3. Elephants are the world’s largest land animals. Male African elephants can reach up to 9.8  feet tall (3 meters) and they can weigh 8,800 – 16,000 lbs  (4,000 – 7,000 kgs).
  4. There are three types of elephants (the African Savannah Elephant, the African Forest Elephant, and the Asian Elephant.) It was only recently discovered that the African Forest animals were in fact their very own species of elephant and not a subspecies of the African Elephant.
  5. Cool Fact! You can tell the African elephant because they have large ears shaped like the continent of Africa. Asian elephant’s ears are smaller and shaped like India.
  6. An elephant’s tusk never stops growing. Only male elephants grow tusks.
  7. Elephants throw mud and sand over themselves after a bath to protect themselves from the sun – their very own sunscreen.
  8. Elephants dig up waterholes and create their own footpaths which literally change the landscape all around them.
  9. Elephants are called pachyderms, thick-skinned animals. Most elephants have skin that is 1 inch thick.
  10. Each elephant creates one ton of poop per week. Yes, this was their #1 favorite fact. Go figure!
