The world we live on is incredibly complex, so let’s help students break it down layer by layer and sphere by sphere to find out what it all means and how the pieces are all connected with this Layers and Spheres of the Earth Notebooking Research Journal.

Layers and Spheres of the Earth Notebooking Unit

How many spheres make up the earth? How many layers are there? You’ve heard about the mantle and the atmosphere, but what about the moho, turbopause, and mesopause?

This notebooking research journal looks at 26 layers or spheres of the earth and gives students room to record:

  • the depth or altitude of each
  • what layers or spheres come above and beneath it
  • special characteristics of the layer or sphere
  • if the layer or sphere supports life

Students have the opportunity to do independent research and record facts about the:

  • inner core
  • outer core
  • mantle
  • moho
  • asthenosphere
  • oceanic crust
  • continental crust
  • lithosphere
  • hydrosphere
  • biosphere
  • atmosphere
  • homosphere
  • trubopause
  • heterosphere

  • troposphere
