I went snorkeling for the very first time last week; the fish were amazing. If your kids love the ocean and are curious about all types of fish, then grab these printables to help your kids learn about fish this homeschool year.

The Beauty of Aquariums
My kids love the aquarium, and I must admit, so do I. The peacefulness of the fish swimming, and the unknown of the ocean deep makes us all love to see the beauty of fish.
I spent most of my adult life hating the beach. It is because of purely selfish reasons. Messiness is not my thing. I mean, sand in diapers, sand in cars, and trailed through the house to our bathrooms right after a beach trip, poop emergencies just when you want to sit down in the sun – they all repelled any feeling of wanting to let my kids enjoy a day at the beach.
Fast forward over a decade, and I find that the Lord has brought me to an island… surrounded by beaches. Yay, me. Well, that wasn’t my exact sentiment when I finally got here. Yet, I must say it has grown on me over the years.
Seeing Fish Up Close
Being able to go to beaches that are secluded, water clear enough to see your toes, and hues of blue that you never thought were possible, have made the experience less dreadful for me. Not to mention that my children are also older now, so they clean up after themselves.
Recently, we went snorkeling. The fish were breathtaking, unafraid, graceful, and contained colors beyond comprehension. Fish indeed are precious creatures made by our good Lord. What a fascinating creation he has made to occupy our waters.

Fish Facts for Kids
Fish can live in six different types of waters:
- Warm Saltwater
- Cold Saltwater
- Warm Freshwater
- Cold Freshwater
- Hatches in Freshwater, Lives in Saltwater
- Hatches in Saltwater, Lives in Freshwater
There are over 30,000 different kinds of fish, but there are few things that ALL fish have in common.
That slimy feel of fish has a purpose. It helps them quickly glide through the water.
The largest fish is a whale shark that can reach fifty feet in length.
The smallest fish is a Philippine goby fish, which is less than 1/3 inch long at best.
Fish have a “sense organ” that works like radar to help them navigate through dark or murky waters. The sense organ is called the lateral line.
There are flat-bodied fish that camouflage themselves on the ocean floor, some fish (like tuna) can swim up to 43 mph (70 kph), they have relatively small brains, and over 1000 fish species may be extinct soon. The information your kids can learn by studying fish is endless.
If you are enjoying an all-about-fish unit in your homeschool, then use these resources and printables to help your kids learn about fish from home.
