Ways Plants Move Guided Drawing

When you think of plants, you might not immediately think of all the ways they move. After all, most of them are rooted to the ground. But when you look closer, you’ll find there is actually a lot of movement to discover!

Learning Plant Terminology

We always had a garden when I was growing up, and I always loved learning new terms about plants and gardening that helped me feel even more a part of things (not that helping to process bushel upon bushel of garden produce didn’t let me know that the garden was a family project!).

Plant tropisms are how plants move toward or away from certain stimuli. Have you ever had a potted plant in the window bend toward the sun? That’s a type of tropism.

This unit helps kids understand five of the ways plants move:

  • Tropism
  • Geotropism
  • Hydrotropism
  • Phototropism
  • Thigmotropism

Plants also need help moving to get their start. That’s where methods of seed dispersal come in. Some plants grow right where the seed falls. Others take a bit of a journey to get to a new location.

This unit looks at dispersal by:

  • Gravity
  • Animal ingestion
  • Animal fur
  • Water
  • Explosion
  • Wind
  • Fire-mediated

Each of the twelve terms in this guided drawing unit includes a short paragraph explaining what the word means and two guided drawing activities that allow kids to draw either half of a given picture or the entire picture. A short review wraps up the unit (answer key is included).
