My kids love to use their imagination but getting them to actually write down their thoughts and ideas can be challenging at times. That’s what I love about story writing prompts. They are so easy to use and great to help kids get started on a new story.
Writing prompts can be used in a variety of ways to improve kids writing skills and confidence. If your child gets stuck on how to get started, prompts can give them a little nudge. If they need help to stay focused on a topic, prompts are a simple way to keep them on track.
October 27th is “Tell a Story Day” which makes it the perfect time to get started on a unique story of your own. Teach kids these simple parts of a story to help them get started – characters, setting, plot, conflict, and resolution. I always start with the plot and conflict, which then easily leads to their setting and theme. For me, the hardest part was always developing good characters that make sense with the plot and conflict.
There are a variety of writing prompts you can use with your children. Put some random toys in a bag and let them draw one out to create a story around. Pull pictures from a magazine and encourage them to write a story about it. Use simple words to evoke a certain feeling or emotion they can write about.
One of the easiest ways to get started creating stories is by using writing prompts. Check out these fun story writing prompts for seasons, holidays, and much more!
