Chemistry can be an overwhelming science subject to teach. It also seems like it is something that is only taught in the upper grades and to older students. That is definitely not the case. When you homeschool, you can incorporate many fun science subjects, and chemistry is one of them! A great way to start teaching it is by introducing your kids to mixtures and solutions. Check out these free mixtures and solutions worksheets.

What are mixtures and solutions?

A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined, but are combined together. Most everything around us is made up of mixtures. A fun thing to do with your kids is to let them look around your house for mixtures. This is easily done by opening the fridge and looking at bottles of dressing, sauces, soups and dips.

A solution is a type of mixture of two or more substances. Two or more substances must be mixed together in order to have a solution. The components of a solution include a solute and a solvent.

Mixtures and solutions are a great introduction to chemistry. When your kids explore the different types of solutions and mixtures they can actually “see” what they are made up of, and how they have different chemical properties. It is a lot of fun to try to separate them and put them back together again with fun science experiments.

Hands-On Science with Mixtures and Solutions

When I was in school Science was always so boring and dry, with a large, heavy textbook. As a homeschool mom, I have grown to realize that when Science is taught in a hands-on, immersive manner it is quite the opposite! Kids thrive on hands-on experiments and exploring and getting their hands dirty.

Not only do they thrive, they actually learn and really begin to appreciate and enjoy science. The topic of mixtures and solutions is one of those units that your family can have a lot of fun with. Your children will enjoy mixing, separating and collecting data with these.
