Whether it be jealousy, a little bit of bitterness or pride, every other branch of service wishes – if only for a moment – it could experience the Air Force. It’s not for the reasons you think.

Yes, air flight is super cool. However, the main reason why all of us vets may have glancing thoughts of what life would be like in the U.S. Air Force is for one thing.

Accommodations.

There is no secret that the U.S. Air Force always puts its staff at the very best places. Army, Navy, Marines – we really can rough it out sometimes. I mean, we even have tent hospitals.

However, Air Force (A.F.) is a different story. If you are ever looking for Air Force people in a military town, look at the best building, with air conditioning and the best accommodations. It’s just the way it is.

We see them as the preppy branch of service. It’s not to say that’s bad at all. It’s just to say that when we are in a tiny bunk at the bottom of a ship’s living quarters, we wonder how we could have missed the mark. We could have been in a cushy hotel with air conditioning.

Anyway, such is life. Whether we (I was in the U.S. Navy, by the way.) are jealous of beautiful and clean hotels or not, we do not underestimate the need for the U.S. Air Force as part of the branches of service.

What does the U.S. Air Force do?

The U.S. Air Force is the branch of the military that carries out aerial warfare and peacetime services. They conduct air operations, providing air support for those service members on land and sea (naval forces). They also aid in the recovery of troops in the field.

Here are some cool facts about the U.S. Air Force:

Stay in beautiful hotels, of course. Kidding. The Air Force rocks. Here’s why:

The Air Force is the youngest branch of the military, founded in 1947.

The Air Force (North American Aerospace Defense Command – better known as NORAD) tracks Santa Clause. Yup, you read that correctly. Of course, many folks don’t tell their kids Santa is Real BUT, how cool is it that Air Force even has an app to follow along the “Santa’s” route on Christmas Eve.

In 1947, the Air Force Bell X-1 rocket-powered aircraft was the first aircraft to break the sound barrier.

Both Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush served as Airman in the U.S. Air Force.

They are simple but cool. Why you ask? The letters in the front of A.F. aircraft stand for:

  • Aircraft with a B prefix are bombers.
  • Aircraft with an F prefix are fighters.
  • Aircraft with a C prefix are for cargo.

Before the Air Force became its branch, they were part of the U.S. Army.

Airmen welcome new commanders by stomping on their roof, making lots of noise,  and banging on their doors. Then the commander welcomes them in with some refreshments.

The Air Force built a supercomputer out of… Sony PlayStations. It is the 33rd most powerful computer in the whole world.

OK, I will leave you with this one. Do you know Air Force One isn’t the name of a plane? It’s actually the radio call for any U.S. Air Force plane that is carrying the president of the United States of America.
