I have a long history of military family members. In fact, I have three active members in various branches right now. While we teach our children that God is our first priority, we also want them to know the sacrifice our own family members and those who have gone before make/made to help retain our freedom in this country.

Not being a military brat or member myself, sometimes I find it hard to teach my kids specifics about the different branches of the military. If my direct family isn’t in that branch, I most likely don’t know what they do or their rankings. So, I utilize the internet to help me teach my kids about the different branches.

That being said, there are several times a year it just makes sense to add in some patriotic and military-type studies. The first being Armed Forces Day, which is celebrated every year on the third Saturday in May.

Armed Forces Day is a great time to learn about the different branches of the military as well as what their specific realm of expertise (air, land, sea, etc.). Each branch has a primary function and mission, plus their own rankings and commander to which they report. You could choose to study one branch in particular or do an overview of them all.
