Foreign Language is not my favorite subject to teach. It wasn’t my favorite subject to learn in school either. But as a homeschool mom, I know it is important to teach it to my children. We have done a few simple words in Spanish here and there, but nothing consistent.

My best friend from college is an interpreter for a deaf student and also at her church. When we visited this past year, they were able to watch her “work” and became fascinated with sign language. And since they know I took sign language in college, they ask me all the time what signs are for certain words.

That’s when I decided we should start watching some videos and learning a foreign language, even if just a little bit. But all my kids want to learn different languages and I didn’t want to buy four different curriculums. So I went searching for videos on YouTube.

Foreign Language Learning YouTube Channels

If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to learn a foreign language in your homeschool, check out these YouTube channels and videos.

NOTE: YouTube can be a wonderful tool when used correctly. We encourage parents to review channels first before your child views it. We do not make any claims to know what is appropriate for your child(ren), that is totally your call. Please review these channels to make sure they align with your homeschooling goals and values.

Miss Panda Chinese – This channel is great for young learners who are just beginning Chinese. With fun, simple graphics and sometimes even children, your kids will forget they’re learning.

Basho & Friends – With this range of videos, kids can learn Spanish, French, and Mandarin – all through music. And over 73,000 people can’t be wrong about how fun they are, right?

Dialect101.com – This channel is solely dedicated to teaching foreign languages. They have a ton of videos for beginners to start learning basic words and phrases, plus some geared specifically toward kids. Choose from Spanish, French, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin, German, Swedish, Thai and more!

Easy Languages – This channel is unique in that it isn’t taught from one teacher, but rather through real people on the streets. So while I think this is a great concept, I would proceed with caution for sure. Each video has captions in both the local language and English, so no matter what level you are you can learn and follow along.

Steve Kaufmann – lingosteve – Self-taught linguist, Steve Kaufmann just loves languages. His videos teach you about the different languages in a simple, easy-to-understand way; the way he learned them!

Duolingo – Duolingo is a popular app used by a lot of people who want to learn a foreign language at their own pace.

LanguagePod101 – They offer a ton of different YouTube channels with hundreds of videos for all different languages.
