What is Flag Day anyway?
We celebrate Flag Day in the United States of America on June 14th. The reason we acknowledge Flag Day is to commemorate our country’s adoption of the US flag on June 14, 1777. The holiday became official in 1949.
Why do we celebrate Flag Day?
To me, Flag Day is significant and worthy of being celebrated because it teaches our kids the importance of honor and being a patriot of our country.
We use this day as a time to remember our loyalty to our nation, liberty, justice, and the unity of the states.
Take this time to teach kids what to never do to a flag on Flag Day.
- The flag should not touch anything beneath it like the floor, ground, water, etc.
- You should never sit on the flag or place anything on it.
- The flag should never be used as a ceiling covering.
- Our flag should not ever be displayed with the stars upside down unless it is a signal of extreme distress.
- It also shouldn’t ever be carried flat or horizontally, although sadly I think I have seen this violated before.
Why is the American Flag red, white, and blue?
- RED – stands for valor and hardiness
- WHITE – signifies purity and innocence
- BLUE – represents vigilance, justice, and perseverance

Final Thoughts
Flag Day isn’t a federal holiday, yet it’s still important to acknowledge it as a citizen. Being a veteran of the United States Military, I remember just how important the flag was to our daily lives.
The military taught us what our flag represented. It wasn’t just the valor and perseverance or that it represents our country. The one thing that our flag represents is freedom, and we owe it to our kids to share that with them.
