Fall Scavenger Hunts are our absolute favorite way to spend time outdoors together. Our older kids are paired with a younger child to help them spot the items on the list. It is a great way to get some exercise and spend time together as a family enjoying God’s creation.

Fall Scavenger Hunts

My kids will play for hours outside with friends but tell them we’re going on a hike and they immediately revert back to the hike they took several years ago that they affectionately call “the hike of death”. What was supposed to be a short 1-hour trek turned into almost 5 miles and 2.5 hours of walking up and down hills, through creeks and mud. It is still talked about today.

But when we mention a scavenger hunt – they’re all in! Even though we try to do simple scavenger hunts for the little ones, I usually include harder to find items so the older ones don’t get bored. And sometimes we find new things along the way to add in as a bonus!

Take a Camera along on your Fall Scavenger Hunts

As my kids got older, we started encouraging them to take along their phones to capture images of the hunt and anything they might see that they want to remember. This is a fun way for the older kids to not only participate in the scavenger hunts but possibly learn another skill. And who knows…they might just find a new passion!

You don’t always need a plan

Sometimes the best trips are those we don’t plan. We find a great park or place to hike and take off for the afternoon. When we do this, I try to look ahead for things the kids can spot as we walk. The little ones enjoy the exploration and freedom to roam. So it’s a win-win for everyone!
