What is a noun?

Nouns are the most common parts of speech that you will teach your children when they are learning how to write. A noun names a person, place, thing or an idea. Nouns are usually the main subject in a sentence.

If your children are wondering if a word is a noun they can do a simple noun test by looking up the word in a dictionary. Most of the dictionaries will mark words with the abbreviations n or sub. N which shows that word is a noun.

Types of Nouns

There are lots of different types of nouns found in the English language. You can divide these words up into 8 basic categories.

  • Common Nouns: car
  • Proper Nouns: Florida
  • Singular Nouns: bike
  • Plural Nouns: bikes
  • Collective Nouns: classmates
  • Compound Nouns: firefighter
  • Concrete Nouns: bed
