One of the first parts of speech that children learn is nouns. Giving your children a nouns worksheet is a great way to get some extra practice with this new grammar concept.
What is a noun?
Nouns are the most common parts of speech that you will teach your children when they are learning how to write. A noun names a person, place, thing or an idea. Nouns are usually the main subject in a sentence.
If your children are wondering if a word is a noun they can do a simple noun test by looking up the word in a dictionary. Most of the dictionaries will mark words with the abbreviations n or sub. N which shows that word is a noun.
Types of Nouns
There are lots of different types of nouns found in the English language. You can divide these words up into 8 basic categories.
- Common Nouns: car
- Proper Nouns: Florida
- Singular Nouns: bike
- Plural Nouns: bikes
- Collective Nouns: classmates
- Compound Nouns: firefighter
- Concrete Nouns: bed
