Math is one of those subjects kids either love or hate. There’s not a lot of gray area on it, which makes it hard to convince the naysayers to enjoy it – even if just a little bit. But that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of creativity and a different perspective.
Several years ago we switched our homeschool math curriculum to CTCMath. It was by far the best move we made for my sanity and my children’s learning potential. We have seen each our children soar past what we ever imagined for them and look forward to more years with this program.
That being said, I have a couple of children that occasionally need a little extra help or a different type of explanation to understand a concept. So we often turn to YouTube. There are some great channels out there that do a wonderful job of explaining math in different ways so that kids can understand it.
Sometimes it’s just a change of perspective and other times it has everything to do with the delivery of the explanation and solution. And while I don’t recommend using YouTube as your core curriculum, you could definitely use it as a supplement!

Math Channels for All Ages
Vi Hart – This is such a creative math channel. From edible math to pi videos, musical math and doodles that teach concepts, kids will love watching these fast-paced videos. Although not specifically for elementary kids, I think these videos are geared toward that age-group. But older kids might also enjoy them, so don’t count them out.
Math Antics – This channel has videos for elementary to geometry. For basic arithmetic, he covers place value, decimal place value, the order of operations, and much more. He gets a little more advanced with fractions and percentages and then moves up through Algebra and Geometry. This definitely isn’t a full curriculum but could be a great supplement.
Numberphile – If your kids love numbers, this is the channel for you! These videos are literally geeking out over numbers! They take practical items, like cutting a cake, and show how math can be involved. Want to celebrate Pi Day (March 14th), check out all their Pi videos! And they have so many more!
Khan Academy – You may have heard of Khan Academy for different subjects, but they also have a plethora of math videos. You will find everything from basic addition and subtraction through Calculus. They also have videos to help kids study for the SAT!
The Video Math Tutor – You’ll find videos from preschool/kindergarten age to Algebra. These short videos are a great way to add a little extra learning to your studies or give students a different perspective on a topic. His playlists are the best place to start!
Elementary Math YouTube Channels
Mathademics – This channel uses several different instructors, but they have a nice variety of videos. These videos are geared more toward 3rd-6th grade learners. You’ll see basic addition and subtraction, as well as fractions, decimals, and more. They do have some Algebra videos, but more for lower grades.
Math Mammoth – Math Mammoth can be found here on YouTube and also in print form on their website. With an emphasis on conceptual understanding, you’ll find videos for 1st through 7th grade!
BrainPop Math – Through fun animated videos, kids will learn graphing, division, all about Pi, making a math movie and more! Known for its colorful and engaging videos, BrainPop covers a wide range of topics on math and more.
Brain Candy – With Monster Trucks to help kids learn math concepts, your littlest ones will enjoy this channel. Students will learn numbers, counting, and more basics to get them started early on their math learning!
Kids Educational Games – Through fun games and exercises, kids will learn basic math concepts that they can use in their lessons. From basic numbers to shapes, to measuring, to early geometry and more, you’ll find a great list of videos here to get your kids excited about learning math!

Secondary Math YouTube Channels
Math Teacher Institute – While this channel may be targeted to teachers, students could definitely learn from them as well. They cover everything needed to teach secondary math for an entire year. Their videos are short and to the point, so they are quick and easy for kids too!
Simon Deacon – These are perfect for a quick refresh or supplemental learning on a specific topic. You’ll find playlists for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division all the way through SAT prep and into college lessons! This is definitely a channel you’ll want to bookmark.
Patrick JMT – If you have an advanced student that just wants to know more about advanced math, this is the channel for them! Patrick covers the math behind Physics as well as some SAT helps and GED sample questions for those needing a boost.
3Blue1Brown – The purpose of this channel is to make math fun and entertaining. Grant Sanderson wants to show students that math can be fun through his entertaining lessons. Driven by animations, these videos show that difficult problems can be made simpler if you just know how to do it!
Minute Physics – While physics is more science, it definitely requires a fair bit of math as well. These short videos are a fun way to see how math works in the “real world.”
MathTV – This channel has a ton of videos to help your students learn everything from sequences and Pi Day fun, to Algebra and Statistics. This channel shows each problem worked by multiple instructors to give different perspectives.
Math Help – If your student struggles with math but they want to do well in high school and college, this channel is a great place to start. You’ll find video playlists for middle school, high school, college, and math test prep.
Krista King Math – Krista King knows what it’s like to spend hours on math homework only to have that “Ah-ha!” moment days later. Through her YouTube channel, she wants to help students take away that stress and help them get to the Ah-ha! moment sooner! You’ll find videos from basic middle school classes to advanced college calculus on her channel.
