Why is the Statue of Liberty Important?

I know why the Statue of Liberty is important to me. It holds one of my favorite memories. I was in the military stationed overseas and went back home to New York to visit. It was shortly after 9/11 when my sister, daughter and I took the ferry to Ellis Island to visit the Statue of Liberty.

No one was allowed to go up to the torch, but still being next to what symbolizes freedom after 9/11 was surreal. It meant so much to me and forever will.

To the rest of the nation, The Statue of Liberty represents way more. It wholly represents the friendship between nations and freedom from oppression.

As a matter of fact, The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the United States from France in 1886 as an enduring symbol of freedom.

Before air travel, Lady Liberty was the first sign to immigrants that they were finally free and it was their welcome into New York Harbor.

Why is the Statue of Liberty Green?

This is a question many kids don’t ask. They just are OK with thinking the Statue of Liberty was painted green. Other inquisitive kids may wonder, “Why green?”

The Statue of Liberty is coated with a thin layer of copper all around. The copper turns blue-green with age and time due to the chemical reactions between the metal and water.

This chemical reaction is called patination and happens with most copper when placed outside. We have a few science/STEM activities for you to test this out with the kiddos alongside your Statue of Liberty lessons below.

Statue of Liberty Facts for Kids:

  • The Statue of Liberty was originally known as Liberty Enlightening the World.
  • Crews worked round the clock seven days a week for nine long years to finish Lady Liberty.
  • After The Statue of Liberty was completed in France, it was brought to New York’s harbor in 350 pieces, then reassembled in about 4 months.
  • France and the United States took up a collection to pay for the statue. It raised 2,250,000 francs ($250,000 U.S. dollars) and in the 19th century, it was about a million dollars today.
  • The Statue of Liberty is on Ellis Island. The island was a quarantine station of people with smallpox in the 18th century.
  • The statue is actually closer to New Jersey than New York but was established as part of the 8th Congressional District of New York according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
