Printables & Resources About Freedom

The First Amendment says:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

When I think of freedom I think of a few things and our 1st Amendment rights are right up there at the top of my list.

Freedom is a concept that has graced our nation in various forms throughout history. The 1st Amendment has shaped those various forms. Here are some resources to help you teach about 1st Amendment freedoms in your homeschool.

True freedom is in Christ:

The main thing my mind focuses on when I think of freedom lies in our freedom in Christ. Sometimes that is really confusing to me.

I grew to know the Lord in a really legalistic church. So, freedom in Christ was foreign to me and I still have issues with it.

I am reminded of what Christ says about freedom in Him. Jesus promised us freedom, He came to proclaim it. He said in John 8:36, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”

Jesus was freeing us to live for Him. I don’t think people really understand until they fully grasp who He is. He freed us to walk with Him and to be the people that He created us to be.

It seems completely counter-intuitive, but obeying Christ creates freedom. When I obey the Lord the pressure is released. Obeying Christ brings peace and calm and understanding that surpasses anything else.

How could we not share the knowledge of this with our children?

Galatians 5:13 -18 tells us what freedom in Christ means.

“My brothers and sisters, you were chosen to be free. But don’t use your freedom as an excuse to live under the power of sin. Instead, serve one another in love. The whole law is fulfilled by obeying this one command. “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” If you say or do things that harm one another, watch out! You could end up destroying one another.”

“So I say, live by the Holy Spirit’s power. Then you will not do what your desires controlled by sin want you to do. The desires controlled by sin do not want what the Spirit delights in. And the Spirit does not want what the desires controlled by sin delight in. The two are at war with each other. That’s why you are not supposed to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the authority of the law.”

This freedom is like no other, it surpasses what our brains can comprehend. It doesn’t mean we can go on sinning as many people think these days. Let’s pray that this is so imprinted in our children’s hearts so much that it becomes a part of who they are.
