Did you know the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World weren’t actually all built in the Middle Ages?
It seems human beings have always loved to make lists. Even back in ancient Greece and Rome, they made lists of the “must-see” places in the world. Some of those lists survived, got added to, and changed over the years. The Seven Wonders of the Medieval World is a compilation of seven landmarks that would have been known to many throughout the medieval world.
So, when exactly where the Middle Ages? Do you know that historians don’t all agree?
For our reading comprehension unit, we’re going to define the Middle Ages as starting when the Roman Empire fell in AD 476 and ending when Christopher Columbus discovered the New World in 1492.
This newest installment in our reading comprehension series explores:
- Stonehenge
- Colosseum
- Catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa
- Hagia Sophia
- Leaning Tower of Pisa
- Great Wall of China
- Porcelain Tower of Nanjing
Students will move through the wonders chronologically, learning interesting facts about each one. Each of the seven lessons is followed by reading comprehension questions students can answer aloud or in a notebook. Vocabulary words round out the unit.
There are multiple ways that you can use our reading comprehension printables aside from reading and answering questions. Here are some ideas:
- Create a notebook for your reading comprehension units & make each new one that comes out a new “section”
- Use written narration to write what you learned
- Use a blank notebooking page to draw an illustration of the subject of the reading passage
- Use a separate page to answer the questions with complete sentences
