When I first started homeschooling I didn't realize my daughter was struggling to comprehend what she was learning. It wasn't until she kept "failing" worksheets and quizzes did I realize that we had a problem. I almost gave up homeschooling, but in fourth grade we discovered notebooking and that changed everything.
Fast forward to middle school and at our end of the year evaluations she performed poorly on reading comprehension. Since she excelled in written narration, I knew she was remembering what she had read, but she had trouble answering questions following the text.
Keeping that in mind while homeschooling our youngest, I have worked on reading comprehension as a "subject" in our homeschool. I have used the McCall-Crabbs books, which I love, but I wanted to use text that correlated with what we were learning in our curriculum.
