You know you love a curriculum when you complete the entire series! The Mystery of History is one of them. I am going to talk more about how we use The Mystery of History in our homeschool as well as offer you the The Mystery of History Planning & Portfolio Pages for free!
Homeschooling History
I was never much of a history fan when I was in the public school system. My history class was dry and boring. I only recall timelines and a lot of date memorization of events I couldn’t even name today. When it came to teaching my children history, I was a student learning from scratch just as they were.
After we used various curriculum with our first daughter (we have two girls) I was able to formulate a much better plan for our youngest. I have had a few things planned for specific grades since she was BORN and The Mystery of History is one of them.
It has been difficult to wait until she started fifth grade to cycle through it again, but the excitement has been building and we begin in the fall.

The Mystery of History
The Mystery of History Volume I the third edition is a beautiful, hardcover, full-color book just like the newer volumes of The Mystery of History III and The Mystery of History IV.
I have in mind all that I want to do as we cycle through The Mystery of History again and started making notes and lists in my notebook, but if you saw my stacks of spiral notebooks, you would think it was a crazy idea too. How in the world would I keep track of that?
Planning Out The Mystery of History
Instead I decided to create a printable planning page I could save on my computer for easy access. Then my planning page turned into quite a project and suddenly I had a beautiful layout of planning pages that I could use to plan our journey through The Mystery of History.
I would have bought these had they existed to make my planning easier, along with the fact that you can use these pages to document history as a subject in your portfolio. I have decided that I would prefer them to be a blessing to other homeschooling families though, so I am sharing them with you for free.
The Mystery of History Volume 1 Lesson Plans
Beginning with the Creation of the world, The Mystery of History four-volume series teaches world history in chronological order. It is written from a Christian worldview in a conversational tone that makes it much more enjoyable than a dry history textbook.
Volume I covers Creation to the Resurrection (c. 4004 B.C. – c. A.D. 33) in 108 total lessons with 3 lessons each week plus a review, exercise, quiz or test at the end of each week. We used the folderbooks to create a MOH lapbook available from the publisher as well as the notebooking and coloring pages for this volume. There are also challenge cards, perfect for review.
The Mystery of History Volume 2 Lesson Plans
The Mystery of History Volume II spans the Early Church and the Middle Ages (c. A.D. 33 – 1456). It’s broken down into 4 quarters/2 semesters, and 28 weeks. The text is longer in this volume and includes 84 total lessons with 3 lessons each week with a review, exercise, quiz or test at the end of each week. Remember, you can do as much or as little as you want when using The Mystery of History.
This volume starts lesson one at Pentecost. By then end of the first semester you have traveled through Paul’s Missionary journeys, learned about the martyrs of the early church, studied about Nero, Constantine, the Mayans, Attila the Hun, and so much more.
My daughter enjoyed the coloring pages and we used the challenge cards when using this volume.

The Mystery of History Volume 3 Lesson Plans
The Mystery of History Volume III was my favorite volume. I think I am just a lover of knights and castles and reading books about the Medieval Times. This volume covers history from The Renaissance, Reformation, and Growth of Nations (1455 –1707) in 84 total lessons (3 lessons a week). This volume starts at The Age of Rebirth (1455-1521).
The lessons in Volume III are longer than both Volumes I & II. The amount of reading in this volume ranges from about 3-6 pages per lesson. Woven throughout the lessons are full color pictures, sketches, and artwork from this era.
We discovered early on that we preferred notebooking as written narration with many of our subjects, so we enjoy reading the text aloud and then we use the notebooking pages to summarize what was learned.
There are a lot of books that we enjoyed while using MOH Volume III, and I am glad I can get organized with our reading list ahead of time using the planning pages. Thankfully I saved them and they are on our bookshelf!
The Mystery of History Volume 4 Lesson Plans
By the time my daughter finished Volume III, she was starting ninth grade and we switched to American History. I think it was mid-year when I heard that The Mystery of History Volume IV was releasing before the next school year (her tenth grade year). Yes, I did the happy dance.
She was glad to move on from American History and back to The Mystery of History to finish up her cycle of world history. Since she was now using MOH in high school, I did require her to take the quizzes and tests and she also used the notebooking pages for written narration.
They came in handy when it was time to study, as did the challenge cards.
