What does mixed number mean?
A mixed number is made up of a whole number and a proper fraction. In a mixed number, the whole number and proper fraction are represented as one number. An example of a mixed number is 2 ½ or 1 ¾ or 3 ¼.
What a mixed number means is a representation of any number in between two whole numbers. A number line will help your student understand there are numbers in between a whole number. Within 5 and 6 may be mixed numbers like 5 ¾ or 5 ½.
So basically, it is formed by a whole number, a fraction’s numerator, and a fraction’s denominator. They have a whole number part and a fraction part/ or whole parts and fraction parts.
How do you figure out a mixed number?
The main reason we learn mixed numbers is that we need to understand and interpret improper fractions. Improper fractions are when a fraction’s numerator is larger than the denominator.
By changing improper fractions to mixed numbers, we can use those amounts in real applications to solve. We calculate improper fractions then change them to mixed numbers for comprehension.
Improper Fractions
Improper fractions are also called top-heavy fractions. This way, kids know the fraction needs to be evened out somehow to read correctly.
Converting Improper Fractions
To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number your child has to figure out how many whole numbers can be for dividing by the numerator and common denominator.
Write that number as the whole number. Then the remainder is the new numerator while the denominator stays the same. Example: 7/2 is 3 ½
