The weather is ever-changing in March. It is the beginning of snow thawing and warmer temperatures in some places. In other areas, it is the beginning of the “spring showers” and much warmer weather that vies for a place with colder weather. With changes in weather and being stir crazy, we are always looking for some March fun activities to do.

I spent some time in northern Florida in March, and it was as cold as 32 degrees one day and a high of 67 the next. As you can imagine, everyone was outside on the balmy, sunny day. Even as adults it is hard to keep our focus when the outdoors weather beckons to us.

I like to keep a list handy of fun activities your kids can do no matter what the weather looks like. It is a great way to keep kids busy and put older ones in charge of organizing, which is a good life skill.

If there are no older kids, you can do these things with a friend who has similar-aged children. What a fun way to spend an entire afternoon, or at least an hour, doing an activity that inspires creativity and thinking skills.

What are 10 fun activities for outdoor weather?

  1. Listening Skills. Take turns wearing a blindfold. How many different sounds can you identify in one minute?
  2. Make a homemade kite. Having a list of supplies and directions is a smart idea for your kids to build one.
  3. Go on a walk and collect nature items to make a picture. You can glue them to construction paper and cardstock for some nature art work.
  4. Study changes in weather and make a weather station. Rain collection with measurements is easy to do and check daily. The kids love this activity, and it teaches measuring skills. Make a chart when you calculate the rainfall each day (some days will be zero).
  5. Plan a garden. What will you plant? Do you want vegetables or flowers to attract pollinators?
  6. Take turns planning a scavenger hunt. Scavenger hunts are great to do inside or out.
  7. Use a compass and map out your yard. Which direction does each side point?
  8. Navigate using the sun as your guide.
  9. Study different birds as they gather during the spring and watch them coming to your yard. Can you find any hidden nests?
  10. Study butterflies. Are they around yet? When are they coming and what can you plant to attract them to your yard?

How do you make a homemade kite?

You can use recyclable materials to make a kite. We used plastic bags with handles and fishing lines to make kites that didn’t fly high, but they did keep the kids busy and running back and forth.

You can also use construction paper, and skewers with yarn and run through the yard with them.

More fun outdoor activities

Another activity  is relay games. I have learned that little ones are upset when they lose against an older sibling. One idea is to give the little one a head start or move the line up for the younger child.

Activities will change depending on the weather. Once the day is nice, it is challenging to keep the children indoors, so a trip to a local park or perhaps an empty field is just the thing. Rollerblades, bikes, and skateboards are all fun, depending on the ages of your children.

Keeping a nature book on hand is handy as well. You never know what type of wildlife you will see that needs a book (or a smartphone) to look up the answer.

Keep all your fun March plans organized

March is full of lots of fun and busy activities that you can do with your kids. Keep everything organized and planned out with our March Ultimate Checklists. It is free for subscribers. New checklists and to-do lists will be sent out to you each month. These are super helpful for staying on track and with fun ideas if you are in a creative slump.

In conclusion:

What was your favorite activity as a kid? Be sure to share it with your children. They love to hear “growing up stories,” especially if you have a big family and can share some of the antics with your children.

Keep it positive! My parents were busy when I was young; however, my grandmother loved to take us outdoors, and I still have the scars to prove that I was an active kid. Encourage your children to be active, and it is another lifelong experience they will enjoy as an adult.
