Christmas is my favorite season. Yes, it is a season in our family. I love the decorating, the lights outside, the music and most of all the family time together. I love spending time with our family and the wonder and awe on their faces during the Christmas season is priceless. And I love studying the Nutcracker with a delightful set of Nutcracker printables.

Enjoying the Ballet

Several years ago I enrolled both of my girls in ballet. I loved it so much growing up, I just wanted them to have the same experience and develop a love for it as well. Unfortunately, only one of them loved the classes, while the other did not. I was so sad that it didn’t work out and they will likely never dance in the Nutcracker.

However, that doesn’t stop me from watching it every year with my kids. The past few years I have checked out the ballet from our local library and worked to create a unit they would enjoy. I know my boys will likely not enjoy the ballet, but I want them to appreciate the arts and ballet is a part of that.

There is so much more to ballet than just dancing. There is acting and storytelling involved as well as the music. It is each piece moving together cohesively that helps create a bigger picture and brings the entire story and experience together. If I can get them to see and understand that, then I call the unit and study a win!

Nutcracker Ballet

The Nutcracker Ballet is a two-act ballet adapted from the libretto “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” written by E.T.A. Hoffman. The score was written by Tchaikovsky and has become a perennial favorite of adults.

The Nutcracker is a magical Christmas adventure which begins at a Christmas Eve party. Marie (who is also called Clare in many versions) is given a Nutcracker at the party.

That night she has a dream where the Nutcracker leads toy soldiers in a fight against an evil mouse king. When all seems lost, Marie throws her slipper at the mouse king hitting him on the head. The mice run away carrying their king while the Nutcracker turns into a prince.

And now the audience can join Marie as the prince takes on a journey to the Land of Snow and the entire Land of Sweets. When she wakes in the morning, the Nutcracker is in her arms.
