It seems like the newer, modern era wars don’t get as much coverage to them. This may be because they were shorter and didn’t encompass the whole world, but they are still important to study and remember. If your students are interested in learning more about modern wars they will enjoy these free worksheets and unit studies.

What are the modern wars?

The modern wars actually started with World War 1 in 1914, which was the first modern war in the world. Other notable wars much later in the Modern Era were the Korean War, the Vietnam War, The Persian Gulf War and the War on Terror.

The Gulf War was only from 1990-1991, but I remember it like it was yesterday because I was about 12 years old at the time. I specifically remember Operation Desert Shield. The early 90’s were also a time where trading cards were popular. Can you believe that they actually had trading cards for the war? I believe this was the 90’s version of propaganda posters or something to encourage morale for the war at hand.

My little brother collected these cards at the time. I remember going to the mall on the weekends to visit the trading card kiosks! These cards were produced by Topps (the baseball trading card company) and they actually had cards and stickers that represented the war. You could collect cards of President George H.W. Bush, Colin Powell,  Schwarzkopf, Saddam Hussein and Mikhail Gorbachev. There were also many weapon cards and military details. If you are learning about this war your kids will get a kick out of the trading card history information!
