These free ways to learn about garbage collectors as community helpers will be a great way to appreciate these unsung heroes with our homeschool kids.
DO NOT forget your garbage haulers when thinking about community helpers. You definitely notice how much you need them when they aren’t around.
Let your garbage collectors not come around for a week or two and you will realize just how important they are.
One thing I will never forget is just how important garbage collectors are during natural disasters. A couple of years ago the island where I live faced a Category 4 Tropical Cyclone.
Although we had no fatalities, we had huge amounts of damage in infrastructure and debris. The Waste Authority had to hire a slew of temporary employees in order to keep up with the debris and trash collection needed following the aftermath.
Since we are a small country with a small economy, trash collectors do not earn much income. So you will always find homes giving the trash collectors drinks, food, or even lunch money.
We just understand that their pay does not match their importance to our community in our little island.
So, don’t wait until a natural disaster for your family to learn to appreciate our neighborhood trash collectors. There are reasons right now to take a moment to show some gratitude to these community helpers:
Trash collectors make our world a better and cleaner place.
They risk their health and well-being to do their job well. (Garbage collectors have been said to be one of the most dangerous professions today.)
Can you imagine if we had to take our own trash to the landfill ourselves? Trash weighs a lot and it smells. We just don’t appreciate these community workers enough.
