These free ways to learn about electricians will help your kids appreciate and learn all about electrical experts in our communities.
Appreciating electricians is something that took on new meaning for me just a few years ago.
In 2018, Tropical Cyclone Gita stormed its way through Tonga (the island where I live). I had never been in a cyclone (hurricane) at this magnitude as it came by as a Category 4.
Most of the island was without electricity for 6 weeks. The electricians were working day and night trying to reconnect the community as swiftly as possible.
Electricians from Australia even came to help assist with the workload. It was incredible.
When the electricians finally came by our neighborhood, many of us stood in front of our homes to clap for them. It was a pretty awesome day.
I already live in a second-world country, so I am used to living without some of our first-world conveniences.
However, stop for a moment and think about what would happen if your power were to go out. What if you had no generator or electricians to fix it? THAT is how important electricians are.
In the country where I live, the negative view of this blue-collar work is still around. Many people feel that if you do not have an office job then you are not successful or smart.
My husband’s father still has aspirations of my husband becoming a lawyer. He also can’t understand why I left my 9-5 job, in part to help my husband with his construction business.
However, blue-collar work like electrical engineering makes up the cornerstone of many societies.
My friend eloped with her husband when she was young. The reason why was because her parents were doctors, and her husband was “only” an electrician.
These types of jobs were thought of as lowly. Fast forward to now, and their businesses are thriving.
My friend and her husband help their families and others in the community. They also provide paid internships for electrical students fresh out of school.
Their electrical company is one of the best community helpers I know here.
Many times we don’t really grasp how important electricians are – until we need them. Then we reeeeeeeeally need them.
Here are just a few facts to help your kiddos learn to appreciate electricians just a little bit more:
-Master Electricians train almost as much as a doctor does. Between years of hands-on experience, apprenticeship, taking certification exams, and on-the-job requirements of about three years, it is safe to say you have an expert electrician.
-Electricians can specialize in different areas such as residential, commercial, industrial, or outdoor power lines. Solar power electricians are also coming on the rise.

-Celebrities like Mr. Bean and Elvis Presley began training as electricians before becoming famous.
-Electricians are also experts in safety and precautions.
-Problem solving and critical thinking is part of the job – daily.
Because of the construction of properties and homes all over the globe, electricians continue to be a growing field, affected little by a country’s stage of the economy – just like plumbers.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of electricians is projected to have a steady growth increase of 8 percent until 2029. This is much faster than the average for all occupations. Homes and businesses continue to require wiring, and electricians will be needed to install the necessary components.
I write this to encourage others to think outside the box when it comes to a profession for their children and for families to appreciate the community helpers all around them, which quite frankly keep our communities flowing smoothly.

Usually, I like to add a pretend play section to our community helper unit. However, somehow I couldn’t find many resources to help us develop a pretend play activity about electricians – understandably so. Pretending to work with electricity the way an electrician does could be dangerous. Make sure your kids understand the limits of what is safe in studying electricity and what is not.
Remember the importance of these community helpers and just how vital electricians can be to our society. We would really feel the loss without them.
