It was such a surprise to me to find out that there are retired firefighters that commit to volunteering at the fire station on their own time, most with no pay at all.
In fact, more than two-thirds of U.S. Firefighters are volunteers, about 745,000 of them in total. The other 370,000 are career firefighters (FireRescue1).
It blew my mind that there was a career choice in service, that has people actually volunteer for nothing. You don’t really see that in other professions. Sometimes dentists do some volunteer work. However, for volunteers to make up two-thirds of the staff is pretty impressive.
I was trying to read up on why people would even become a volunteer firefighter. I just didn’t understand why people would bother to put themselves in harm’s way for people they do not know and for no monetary compensation.
Firefighters have many “whys” and we are grateful for each one. I couldn’t help but come to the conclusion that volunteer firefighters just want to help out. They want to do their share of helping their community be safe.
In the current day and age of self-gratification and selfishness, this firefighter career is nothing short of amazing. This career choice, period, is pretty selfless, and I think I can speak for all of us when I say that we appreciate our local fire departments and are grateful for all they do.
Firefighters rock and your kids are sure to enjoy learning all about them in your homeschool.
These courageous community helpers put out fires, they rescue those in danger, they care for the sick in inured prior to taking them to the local hospitals, they work to prevent fires and they investigate the sources for fire.
Firefighters, and yes even the volunteers, go through constant training and skill development to maintain their skills as a firefighter.
Actually, firefighters need at least 100 hours of training before they can even legally step foot inside a burning building. Not to mention they learn to get dressed in full garb in less than two minute’s time.
