The sense of touch is one of our five senses. Some people think it isn’t as important of a sense as sight or hearing, but it is vital to development and experiencing the world around us. It also helps to keep us safe.

Our sense of touch helps us to receive information about our environments. This sense allows us to feel pain which aids in protecting us from getting hurt. If something is too hot or too cold our body instantly knows this because of our sense of touch.

It is something parents teach their children at a very young age, especially around things that are hot. We don’t want them to get hurt before they understand that what they are about to touch could harm them.

Touch is vital to development in children. When a baby is crying as soon as you rub their back or pick them up they stop. They know you are there and they are not alone. They need to be held and comforted and touched. It is important in bonding with parents as well. It is calming and everyone can use a good hug, it does good for your body!

There are many ways to learn about this special sense.

Check out these printables and other hands-on activities to help you teach about this sense to your little ones.

Hands-On Activities for the Sense of Touch:

Learning about  touch is something that is fun to explore with your kids. I have a great memory of this with my children when they were babies and toddlers. We used to spend a lot of time in the fabric section at our local craft store. I liked to make baby blankets and doll blankets for my girls. I loved watching them in the fabric department.

My favorite thing to do was to watch them reach out to touch and feel the different fabrics. Their facial expressions when experiencing them is still so memorable! I was a young mom and didn’t even realize that I was teaching them about this sense as we explored the fabrics.

We would feel the fuzzy fake fur, the silky satin, rough tulle, and soft baby fabrics. Taking a trip to a fabric store is a great way to explore the sense of touch.
