Are you studying physics and chemistry in your homeschool science this year? One of the topics that come up often in those subjects is needing to learn the difference between mass and volume, and how to calculate it.

FREE Resources and Printables About Mass and Volume

Mass and volume are two of the main units that are used to measure objects or anything that is matter. Matter is basically everything that exists in the world, anything that you can see and touch. So, anything with matter has to have volume and mass in it. It sounds complicated, but it is actually a pretty simple scientific concept!

Let’s learn more about their differences, and ways to calculate mass and volume with these free resources, printables and hands-on science experiments.

We can start by learning about what Mass and Volume is:

What is Mass?

Mass is a measure of the amount of matter that an object contains. Mass can be measured by a balance scale or a triple beam balance or electronic balance in a lab setting. The basic unit for mass to be measured is in kilograms.

What is Volume?

Volume is a measure of how much space that a substance or object takes up. Volume can be measured in different ways depending on the state of the matter. If it is a liquid, solid or a gas.

Hands-On Science Experiments:

These science experiments are a ton of fun for all ages! Kids really love to “see” how things work. With many of these experiments you will see the volume and mass of an object in action. This will hep your children to see and understand what is happening and why it is happening the way that it is. Even your youngest children can get involved and will enjoy pouring liquid and seeing it being displaced to figure out the problem.
