Free Printables About the U.S. Marines

A close cousin to the United States Navy is the United States Marine Corps (USMC); “The Few, the Proud, the Marines.” These free printables about the U.S. Marines will help your family learn more about these warriors of our military defense force.

The Navy/Marine Corps Relationship

If you have been keeping up with our free printables about the U.S. military branches, then you would know that I am a U.S. Navy veteran. Of course, that is my favorite branch of service.

A close second is the United States Marine Corps. Every base I was stationed in had a Marine Corps arm. The two branches go hand in hand. As a matter of fact, the U.S. Marine Corps is its own branch of service but still falls under the Department of the Navy’s administration.

Surprisingly, the Marines and Navy generally get along quite well. The relationship goes back to the American Revolution even. We, meaning the Navy does very little without the participation of the United States Marines. It’s just how we do things.

In my experience, there was a productive coexisting relationship, where both branches knew they needed the other and the respect for that need followed. I am sure it’s like that in many other places.

On a larger scale, because the Marines are amphibious, meaning their super tactical missions on land and air, the Navy carries them around where they need to go. It is a fully functioning relationship.

When I was in the United States Navy, I was a Hospital Corpsman. A Hospital Corpsman is equivalent to the Army’s “Medic.” The Navy’s Hospital Corpsman provides all medical needs and aviation units for the Marine Corps.

This was no easy feat. Only the best of the best Navy Corpsman could last through the extreme conditions and missions faced by the Marine Corps. It is pretty impressive considering the warriors that are known as Marines.

Fun Facts about the Marine Corps

• The U.S. Marine Corps was formed as the ground force for the Navy in November 10, 1775 at Tun Tavern.
• I call the Marines warriors because they are. The Marine Corps training is the most challenging and longest of all the branches; basic recruit training lasts 13 weeks long.
• The first Marine Battle was an amphibious raid was on Fort Nassau in the Bahamas in 1776.
• Their motto is Semper Fidelis (Semper Fi for short), which means Always Faithful.
• The Marine Corps Band  (yes, they have a band) is nicknamed “The President’s Own.” They have performed at the inauguration of every American President since Thomas Jefferson in 1801.
• The Marine Corps is the smallest branch of the service. They have about 182,000 Active Duty members and around 38,000 Reserve members.
• The corps has a mascot and an adorable one at that. The official mascot is an English Bulldog named Chesty, to honor the legendary Lieutenant General Lewis B. “Chesty” Puller, Jr. Check out a video of Chesty the XV here.
• The Marine Corp has their own museum which you can visit in person or explore through the virtual tour.

Marine Corps Toys for Tots

Here’s a quick plug if you see the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Foundation box around your communities during the holiday season.

I proudly started and spearheaded my departmental Annual Toys for Tots Drive while in the civil service for five years. The drive brought our department staff together during the holidays, but we were also able to serve our community.

Toys for Tots Mission

The fundamental mission of the Marine Toys for Tots Program is to collect new unwrapped toys and distribute them to less fortunate children.

For 71 Years, the Marine Corps has been making a difference in the lives of American Families all across the country. Since 2001 this has been one of the top-ranked charities by “Philanthropy 400.” 

There is truly nothing like the gift of giving. I encourage you to get involved with your kids this year, to a cause that will bring a smile to less fortunate kids around your community.

Final Thought

Not everyone cut out to be a Marine; they are pretty tough dudes. The Marine Corps is known for being dependable, strong, and trustworthy.
