International Talk Like a Pirate Day is on September 19. A lot of local restaurants have always had fun freebies if you dress up like a pirate. When my kids were younger we would do an entire day of pirate unit studies and dress up to go out and get free stuff.
I am not sure that there as many fun free events available this year, however I still think it would be a lot of fun to make use of a silly holiday like this with free printables about pirates.
My kids have always loved learning about pirates. There is just something fun about dressing up, and talking funny pretending to be a pirate. They love watching the Pirates of the Caribbean, and one of their favorite Disney villains is Captain Hook. My son even turned our playground into a pirate ship one summer.
You could find our kids dressed up yelling from the top of the playground chasing each other with homemade pirate swords all summer long. They even at one point dug a huge hole in our yard to bury and old toy box for a treasure hunt they made up for each other. Don’t you just love imaginative play?
What is a pirate?
I like to call pirates the bad guys of the sea. Unfortunately, they weren’t as goofy and fun as some movies and television shows portray. Pirates were sailors that attacked other ships at sea. They stole their property and were always on the hunt for more treasure aka booty. Stealing property and robbing via ship is called piracy. Most pirate ships are known by the jolly roger on the front of the ship. This is a common identification of a skull and crossbones.
Your kids will be excited to learn that pirates actually exist, and they aren’t just something from an adventure story or movie. They will enjoy learning more about them with these free printable resources.
