Multiplication and Division Struggles with Kids

Multiplication and division are some of those steps in mathematics that can set the future learning of mathematics back if kids don’t get it. For instance, if a child doesn’t really get addition and subtraction, then the possibility of learning multiplication and division will be near impossible.

I didn’t start homeschooling my youngest kids until they had a few good years of public school. It was right around the time that he was learning multiplication. I just about pulled my heart out, when I realized that my son didn’t “get it”.

I literally had to take a step back and research how to help him. Time and time again I got the same answer, although I fought it tooth and nail. I had to do a reset in our learning.

Back to the Basics

The freedom we have in homeschooling allowed me to go back to the basics with addition and subtraction review. We brushed up his skills, then started from the basics with multiplication.

You can reset, rewind, and make sure your children understand math concepts. That begins with great explanations and opportunities for your child to practice. A great way to work on basic math skills is with lots of practice pages.

Should you teach multiplication before division?

Multiplication problems are usually taught in 2nd grade and 3rd grade and are introduced before division with practicing with a times table. Once the multiplication facts are mastered many families move on to teach division problems.

Many families like to teach multiplication along with division so that they can recognize the fact families and understand the correlation between the numbers. A focus on long division is usually introduced and practiced in 4th grade and mastered by the 5th grade.
