Learning about Groundhog Day

I heard a whole lot about Groundhog Day while I was in the New York Public School system. We would watch the news in class while people gathered somewhere to check for the groundhog’s shadow.

My kids went to school for some time in Florida’s public school system, and they never heard of Groundhog Day. I found that pretty interesting.

So, when I started homeschooling and – well, you know many of us do the MOST with the holidays throughout the year – I knew I wanted to teach my kids about Groundhog Day.

History of Groundhog Day

Here is a little history about Groundhog Day, just in case you are not familiar. Did you know the holiday should have been Sonic the Hedgehog Day? OK, maybe not Sonic, but definitely hedgehog.

German settlers arrived in the 1700s to the United States and brought with them a tradition known as Candlemas Day. Superstition said that if the weather was nice on that day, the second half of the winter would be stormy and cold.

First Celebration of Groundhog Day

The first celebration of Groundhog Day in the United States was in the town of  Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. I am not sure if you know, but the famous groundhog to watch each year is named Punxsutawney Phil.

However, at the time, the settlers could not find a groundhog anywhere, so they used the next best thing – the hedgehog! The groundhog was chosen because, like the hedgehog, it winters underground. Additionally, Native Americans considered groundhogs to be smart and sensible animals.

Early Christian settlers considered weather to be important as well and therefore, continued this tradition on February 2nd of each year. If the sun came out on February 2nd, on the day halfway between Winter and Spring, it meant that there would be six more weeks of wintry weather – I hope “wintry” is a word. Seems right.
