Classic Movies to Watch on St Patrick’s Day
Darby O’Gill and the Little People (1960 Rated G) Available on Disney Plus – An old storyteller is is on the hunt for a pot of gold and has to outwit the king of the leprechauns. This classic, fantasy adventure movie stars a young Sean Connery.
The Quiet Man (1952 Not Rated) Available to rent on Amazon Prime – Based on a true story of an American boxer who retires and returns to his native hamlet in Ireland to win the hand of a spirited young woman. Set in the Irish countryside, this great film has beautiful scenery, and local charm. This classic old fashioned charmer stars John Wayne and the beautiful Maureen O’Hara.
The Secret of Roan Inish (1995 Rated PG) Multiple subscription platforms – Fiona is a young girl that moves to a small fishing village to live with her grandparents. Learn about the classic Irish lore of “selkies” as Fiona believes that her younger brother who went missing is being raised by the mythical creatures called selkies.
Finian’s Rainbow (1968 Rated G) Available to rent on Amazon Prime – Fred Astaire stars in this big screen version of a classic Broadway musical about an Irish man who uses math and logic to determine a gold rush around Fort Knox. He must wait for a full moon and a leprechaun to help him find his treasure.

The Secret of Kells (2009 Not Rated) Multiple subscription platforms – If you are learning about Medieval times you and Celtic mythology, you will enjoy this beautiful movie about a young boy in a medieval outpost that finds an illuminated manuscript.
Wolf Walkers (2020 Rated PG) Apple TV + – The animation in this movie is absolutely stunning. A young girl and her hunter father journey to Ireland to help wipe out the last wolf pack. Plans change when she befriends a mysterious young wolf-girl who lives in an enchanted forest.
Riverdance: The Animated Adventure (2022 TVY7) Netflix – Inspired by the live dancing show Riverdance, this computer animated movie is about an Irish boy and his Spanish friend who learn to dance through their sadness with the help of a magical herd of deer.
Luck (G) Apple TV+ – An Apple original film about an unlucky orphan who finds a lucky penny which is a gold coin with a four-leaf clover on it. This coin finally brings her good luck, but then she loses it to a black cat and follows it into a secret “Land of Luck” where she finds a world ran by leprechauns whose job is to create good and bad luck for humans.

Living the Journey: An Enchanting Journey into Old Irish Airs (2014 Not Rated) Amazon Prime Video – This is a beautiful documentary about the journey of a cello player and composer who travels around Ireland in search for the undiscovered secrets of Irish Airs. She meets with renowned Irish musicians, scholars and local characters who share the history and stories behind the music..
Older Than Ireland (2016 Not Rated) Amazon Prime Video – A wonderful, educational documentary about the unique living history of Ireland through the eyes of 30 Irish centenarians. The film explores each centenarian’s journey, from their birth at the dawn of Irish independence to their life in modern day Ireland.
St. Patrick: Apostle of Ireland (2004 Not Rated) Amazon Prime Video – A great documentary to watch on St. Patrick’s Day. Learn about the myth behind this Irish saint who was an ordinary man who accomplished the extraordinary by placing his faith in God. Learn about the few historical facts of this man who walked through the pre-Christian, 5th century Ireland.
Comedies to Watch for St. Patrick’s Day
Luck of the Irish (2001 Rated G) Disney + – This Disney Channel original movie is a sweet comedy about a junior high basketball player with a secret family heritage. He has a lucky gold coin that he carries with him everywhere and it gets stolen. Without this lucky charm, he begins to turn into a leprechaun and he learns about his family’s heritage.
Leap Year (2010 Rated PG) Available to rent on Amazon Prime – A family friendly romantic comedy starring Amy Adams who follows an Irish leap year legend to whisk her boyfriend off on a romantic trip to Dublin to propose.
Leprechaun Movies
The Magical Legend of the Leprechauns (1999 13+) Amazon Prime Video – An original Hallmark movie that is broken up into a mini series starring Whoopi Goldberg and Randy Quaid in this timeless tale of love and triumph. An American businessman and a local beauty navigate an Irish village torn between mischievous leprechauns and magical creatures. Forbidden love with a fairy sparks ancient conflicts that lead to a magical war.
A Very Unlucky Leprechaun (1998 Rated PG) Available to rent on Amazon Prime – Nine year old Molly and her father move to their inherited house in Ireland, nicknamed “Misfortune Manor,” and are plagued by its curse. Facing eviction due to unpaid taxes, Molly befriends a leprechaun played by Warwick Davis who has lost his luck. Molly finds herself in a series of mishaps, needing to reclaim her luck and save their home.
Lucky (2019 TV G) Available for purchase on Amazon Prime – This short animated film was originally created for Nickelodeon. It stars Mark Hammil as Happy McSweeney, an unlucky leprechaun who sets out on a daring mission to retrieve a pot of gold for his family that was stolen by an evil leprechaun.
