I really wish I had this when I was a child and been able to make sense of why we need to know how long it would take a plane to get to a destination if it was going a certain speed. Word problems force children to critically think about conclusions and how they came to those conclusions. Word problems get super tricky, they definitely aren’t straight forward or cut and dry.
That is precisely why our kids really need to “get” word problems. Kids need to visualize the word problems, explain the situation in their own words, determine the appropriate math operation to solve, and then know why they used it.
