Butterfly Unit Study for Older Kids

Scientists estimate there are 20,000-30,000 different kinds of butterflies in the world today! That is an incredible number, and it highlights how diverse this group of insects is. So if you or your kids are ever tempted to see one of these winged wonders fly by and simply think “butterfly,” download this Butterfly Unit Study.
Learning About Butterflies
Get ready to learn about their anatomy, some of the many different types, where they live, and much more including:
- science
- geography
- math
- art
- copywork
Science
In the science section, students will learn about the anatomy of a caterpillar and an adult butterfly and label a diagram of each. They’ll also learn about what makes moths and butterflies different, discover a few of the many different types of butterflies, and read about some of the kinds of plants that attract them.
Geography
In the geography section, students will label 25 countries on various world maps as they locate where various species live. They’ll label selected countries on maps of:
- North America
- Central America
- South America
- Europe
- Asia
- Africa
- Oceania
Math
In the math section, they’ll read about the wingspread of 14 different types of butterflies, answer questions about them, and create a bar graph to show what they’ve learned.
Art
In the art section, they’ll brainstorm color words and be inspired by color pictures of butterflies. They’ll finish the unit study by either tracing or copying “The Caterpillar” by Christina Rossetti in either print or cursive. It’s a fun way to discover some of the wonder God has surrounded us with in our everyday lives.
