Shakespeare & Dickens Celebrate Christmas in Great Britain

Christmas in Great Britain, like many other countries, is full of feasting, gathering, and giving. We have William Shakespeare & Charles Dickens to thank for penning tales of so many of these festive activities we enjoy today. With 40 days of Advent and 12 days (some times more) of Christmas, celebrations in medieval England were the highlight of the cold, winter months.

During Victorian times, Dickens gave us a glimpse into the heart of a community and the soul of one man to teach the importance of giving and gathering during the holiday season. Dickens’ book, A Christmas Carol, forever changed the way many celebrate Christmas in Great Britain and around the world.

Would your family enjoy a Medieval or Victorian Christmas?

You might be surprised at how exciting it can be to learn about how other cultures and time periods celebrate the Christmas holiday season. If you were transported back in time do you think that you would recognize an English medieval winter feast as Christmas based on your family’s 21st-century knowledge of medieval England? Some would most certainly say “Yes!”.

Spotting a Victorian Christmas might be easier, but it would certainly have an excitement all its own.
