We may know a few things about the works of Charles Dickens. However, it is always interesting to learn new things about our favorite authors themselves. These free resources for studying Charles Dickens & his works are great for that.
We are most likely familiar with his famous works like Great Expectations, A Tale of Two Cities, Oliver Twist, and my favorite one, A Christmas Carol.
Isn’t it amazing to write a piece of work where people all around the world celebrate your literature every year (A Christmas Carol in December)? Then, your other work is studied in almost every classroom and homeschool for years on end since the 1800s?
Dickens also worked as a journalist and wrote numerous works on political and social issues. Here are some of his most notable works:
- Bleak House
- David Copperfield
- Great Expectations
- Oliver Twist
- Dombey and Son
- A Tale of Two Cities
- Little Dorrit
- A Christmas Carol
- The Mystery of Edwin Drood
- Hard Times
But there are plenty more.
Want to learn a bit more about one of the best authors of the 1800s? Here goes:
-Here’s some encouragement for those of us with trials. Charles Dicken’s dad went to jail when he was 12 for “bad debts,” so he had to leave school early and get a job at s boot polish factory.
-He called himself Boz in 1833 when he published some short stories and his sketches for a newspaper.
-Charles Dickens has appeared on the British 10 dollar note.
-Ever heard of the phrase, “what the dickens”? It was first mentioned in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor. This phrase meant something about the devil – and that is why he often used a pseudonym like Boz.
-Most of the Dicken’s novels were written in installments (monthly, weekly, etc.) to be distributed on a subscription basis or in magazines.
-He believed in ghosts and was even a part of a Ghost Club.
-In 1865, Dickens was in a train that was derailed while crossing a bridge. His car was actually left dangling off the side of the bridge. He was also believed to have fought to save passengers.
-OK, last one. The Oxford English Dictionary has claimed that Charles Dickens was the first to use the following words:
- butter-fingers
- crossfire
- dustbin
- fairy story
- slow-coach
- whoosh
Charles Dickens was definitely one of the greats. Learn more about him and his works in the resources below.
