I am excited to share such an important part of my life; the U.S. Navy (USN). These Free Printables About the U.S. Navy will go great alongside your lessons on the military in your homeschool. Obviously, my favorite branch is definitely the Navy (I am biased).

I spent seven years of my life in the United States Navy, and I am eternally grateful.

The Beginning of my United States Navy Story

I was a truant in high school and didn’t care much about school at all. One day I chose to attend school the whole day and it turned out to be Career Day.

I sat through a myriad of people on that school day telling us why we should go into their field of study. The only career path that stuck out to me was the United States Navy. They said two things that caught my attention.

The recruiter said we could travel the world and that they would pay 100% of our college tuition. Consequently, that is all I needed to get focused on joining the Navy.

All I needed to do was get fit, and I was ALL IN. All of a sudden, I had a future ahead of me.

I understand that joining the military isn’t ideal for many families. However, I knew joining the military was my escape from the life I was living. I was on my own and didn’t want to turn into another statistic.

Of course, I am not saying everyone turns into a statistic, but I – surely would have.

So, I joined the Navy.

I was a young woman from the Bronx, New York. Many things happened in my life, and I made many mistakes, but one thing was for sure. The Navy did not fail on its promise; it paid for my college, and I got to travel the world.

I do not regret it at all. As a matter of fact, it could have been one of the best things I did in life after turning to Christ and having my family. Needless to say, the United States Navy holds a special place in my heart.

We learned some pretty cool things when studying it at home. My husband and I both were in the Navy, so he was excited to teach kids about the branch’s history.

Fun Facts about the Navy

Here are some facts you may not have known about the United States Navy to share with your kiddos:

1. George Washington was known as the father of the Navy.

He hardly had experience at sea yet George Washington knew a fleet would be a great proponent to cutting off British supplies. Therefore, he ordered the first warship to be formed. George Washington said:

“It follows then as certain as that night succeeds the day, that without a decisive naval force, we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious.”

 2. Although Navy ships went away for a period after the Revolutionary War, they were brought back by Congress in 1794 primarily to – fight pirates.

3. During World War II, the Navy produced six future presidents of the United States of America.

John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, and George H.W. Bush all had an affiliation with the United States Navy. In fact, from 1961 to 1993, all presidents were from the Navy except Ronald Reagan.

4. The U.S. Navy is the largest in the world.

While I was contracted with Australia living in Tonga, we had an Australian  Naval Ship visit our port. We had a fantastic sunset event. I must say the vessel was small compared to the carrier size ship that my husband and I were used to in America. For instance, this is United States Carrier (USS Harry S. Truman): 

The United States Navy has 323,000 active duty personnel and 109,000 civilian personnel. We have an amazing fleet of 288 battleships, ten aircraft carriers (where my husband and I worked), nine amphibious warships, 22 cruisers, 63 destroyers, 17 frigates, 72 submarines, and 3,700 aircraft. Not too shabby, America!

5. The Navy SEALS are called “seals,” but not for the reason you may think.

The Navy SEALS are members of the Naval Special Warfare unit; they are rigorously trained in the SEA, AIR, and LAND. If I tell you anything else… well, you know.
