Understanding Math Gaps

Starting to homeschool wasn’t easy for me. Even as a prior teacher, by trade, it was a huge challenge for us. My son had gaps in his learning and my daughter was bored out of her mind. The latter is a topic for another day, however, math was surely a doozy in my home.

When we left the public school system to homeschool, my son had been “learning” simple equations. I quickly realized that he truly didn’t understand. Not only didn’t he understand why he was doing what he was doing, but he clearly didn’t perfect the lessons he needed prior to the lessons on equations.

Even, in addition, he would use his fingers. My heart sunk to my chest. I had to not discourage my son from thinking he was a failure while controlling my anger at a system that failed him.

So, our new little homeschool had to rewind and start from the basics to make sure any gaps in education were caught up. It was half a year later, but he did it. Enter the world of equations.

Equations are the very next step to algebra from the basic math problems they learn.

What is a one-step equation?

Equations are math sentences where mathematical expressions are equal to one another. It is indicated by the equal sign (=). Equations build the foundation for pre-algebra.

A one-step equation requires only one step for the equation to be solved. Only one single math operation is needed in order for the number sentences to be solved.

What is a two-step equation?

The second step after pre-algebra is completing a two-step equation. It is solved in exactly two steps and is considered an algebraic equation. Algebra is full-on and it is here folks! We have arrived at the algebra learning curve.

How do you teach one-step problems and two-step problems?

  • A crucial part of teaching multi-step equations is to make sure your students know the basics well.
  • Ensure the mastery of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and integers (negative numbers). These are things kids should know before multi-step equations are introduced.
  • Provide loads of practice. Talk through the steps, allow students to practice with multiple problems. It isn’t about memorization, it’s about understanding concepts.
