Are you exploring a Valentine’s Day unit with your kids? What better way to teach them than with fun hands-on STEM activities to get them engaged, learning, having fun, and exploring God’s Word.

Valentine’s Day has never been my favorite holiday. There have been lots of disappointments and lonely times. But as a Christian, I can’t help but think of God’s love during Valentine’s Day. We see hearts everywhere we go yet, many of us don’t know what true love really means.

It isn’t wrapped up in a nice pretty bow. Love doesn’t come with a happy ending or a romantic promise of loving one another forever.

True love is only found in the context of God’s Word and in knowing who he is. Only then can we truly embrace that Word in all its glory. The same love that puts a ring on a woman’s finger is the same love that yanks a child from the middle of the road when a car is speeding down the street.

God’s love is that way. It doesn’t look like the storybooks say or the movies portray. Yet, we do know that God himself is love. Once we know that, it all comes into perspective.

Here are some Bible verses about love you can share with your children during this season of hearts and cupids.

John 3:16 (ESV) –

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

1 John 4:8 (ESV) –

Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

1 John 4:16 (ESV) –

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

1 Corinthians 13 (ESV) –

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give away all I have, and if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Jeremiah 31:3 (ESV) –

the Lord appeared to him from far away. I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.

1 Corinthians 16:14 (ESV) –

Let all that you do be done in love.

John 13:34 (ESV) –

A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

John 13:35 (ESV) –

By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.
